Xarelto Lawsuits

Xarelto Lawsuits

BCA is investigating lawsuits regarding the blood thinner Xarelto. There are reports of the dangerous side effect of uncontrolled bleeding while taking this medication. There are lawsuits being filed in the United States that claim both Bayer and Janssen Pharmaceuticals hid information on the dangerous side effects of Xarelto. Some of the various side effects include Blood Clots, Rectal Bleeding, Intestinal Bleeding and in some cases Death by uncontrolled bleeding. The FDA approved Xarelto in 2011, however in 2013 issued a warning letter to Bayer and Janssen Pharmaceuticals warning that print advertising minimized the dangerous Xarelto side effects. A common side of effect of blood thinners is bleeding, so additional studies my need to be conducted to confirm the increased risk of Xarelto. There have been a handful of lawsuits already filed for failure to warn. If enough Xarelto lawsuits are filed all over the nation, it could be possible that a Xarelto Class Action lawsuit or Xarelto MDL could be created in the future.

When Xarelto was first introduced to the market, it was said to be a better option that the blood thinner brand Coumadin. Xarelto was superior because unlike Coumadin, patients didn’t need regular blood monitoring. The problem with Xarelto is that unlike Coumadin, Xarelto has no current antidote. So if a patient does experience serious complications like uncontrollable bleeding there is no way to reverse it. The bleeding will continue until the drug is completely flushed out of the body. This can result in patients dying from Xarelto. It has been reported between June 2011 and June 2012, the FDA received over one thousand “adverse event” reports and at least 65 deaths. The reported Xarelto lawsuits are seeking both compensatory and punitive damages. The Xarelto lawsuits claim that manufactures should have properly warned the doctors and thus the patients about the serious Xarelto side effects.

Xarelto Side Effects

  • Nose bleeds

  • Muscle pain
  • Edema

Xarelto Lawsuits Consolidated in MDL

Xarelto Lawsuits are starting to become consolidated into a Xarelto Multi District Litigation. First the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multi district District Litigation ordered over 20 cases to federal court in Louisiana. Then 80 Xarelto lawsuits were transferred in Philadelphia to the Complex Litigation Xarelto Litigation Mass Tort Program. The FDA received over 1,000 adverse events reports from Xarelto. This consolidation is not a Xarelto Class Action, but the creation of Xarelto MDL. There are reports that thousands of Xarelto Lawsuits could be filed in this program. Brent Coon and Associates has extensive experience in mass tort programs. Brent Coon and Associates was named “Mass Tort Litigation Department of the Year” by Texas Lawyer for it’s work on the BP Oil Spill Litigation.

Xarelto Surgery Complications

Xarelto lawsuits and litigation is expanding after data was reported that there are complications when Xarelto is used after hip and knee surgeries. There are reports that patients that take Xarelto after knee and hip surgery are suffering from wound site complications. The FDA approved Xarelto to be used to prevent deep-vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism after surgery. Some of the side effects of using Xarelto after surgery include:

  • Infection
  • Abnormal drainage
  • Hematoma
  • Poor range of motion
  • Pain

In some cases patient who are suffering Xarelto wound complications might require reoperation. A study in 2011 researched 1000 patients which had hip or knee replacements. 31 patients required reoperation, 22 were given Xarelto. If you have suffered wound complications as a result of Xarelto you many entitled to compensation.
