Lawsuits filed after chemical release in Orange County, Texas; EPA releases report
ORANGE COUNTY, Texas (KPLC) – Lawsuits are being filed after a flaring operation caused shelter-in-place orders for parts of Orange County, Texas Thursday.
A rail car at a repair site in Orange was conducting a controlled flaring operation and released ethyl acrylate, the Environmental Protect Agency (EPA) said. The release led to a shelter-in-place for residents of West Orange, Bridge City, and Orangefield.
According to a Beaumont television station, Brent Coon & Associates law firm filed the lawsuits, stating “thousands were stranded away from their homes or worse in their homes with no air conditioning as a part of a massive ‘shelter-in-place’ notice from local government agencies dealing with the situation.”
“This is yet another in the continuing saga of highly volatile and carcinogenic products being dumped, leaked, vented, or spilled into our local environment,” Brent Coon, lead counsel and founder of Brent Coon & Associates said.
A total of 25 people were reportedly taken to Christus hospitals in Southeast Texas due to the chemical release.
A report detailing the incident has been released by the EPA. To read the report, click HERE.
