Motorcycle Crash on SH 195 in Texas Claims One Life

A tragic motorcycle crash that took place Tuesday, March 3, took the life of the unfortunate motorcyclist who died the next day. The accident took place on South State Highway 195.

According to the details shared by the Killeen Police Department, the authorities were notified of a crash involving a motorcycle at about 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The accident took place when a pedestrian attempted to cross the SH 195.

The pedestrian was walking across the southbound lanes of the highway when a white Toyota Prius approached. Instead of crossing the road, the pedestrian started to walk back towards the shoulder of the road. This was when the Prius driver slowed down the vehicle.

A black Harley Davidson motorcycle was riding right behind the Prius. As the Prius slowed down, the motorcyclist was unable to slow down in time. As a result, the motorcycle rear-ended the Prius at a high speed. The sheer impact of the collision tossed the motorcyclist from the motorcycle, causing him serious injuries. The man was identified as Donald Jay Mires, 59.

Mires was airlifted to Baylor Scott and White Memorial Hospital, having sustained critical injuries. He remained under treatment at the hospital until the next day. On Wednesday, Mires succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 2:42 p.m.

The driver of the Prius involved in the crash sustained no injuries and remained relatively safe. The pedestrian who was the cause of the accident was arrested by police. The 31-year-old male was found to be under the influence of alcohol. He has since been charged with failure to yield right of way to the vehicle and public intoxication.

For failure to yield right of way which results in serious injuries, the penalties could be several thousands of dollars as per Texas laws.
