Six-Vehicle Crash Kills Two on Interstate 10
A six-vehicle crash on Wednesday kills two people on Interstate Highway 10. The crash took place when a pickup truck hit vehicles stopped on the westbound lanes due to an earlier crash.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the crash took place at about 5 a.m. A previous crash had taken place on the westbound lanes due to which traffic had been stopped. However, a GMC pickup truck that was traveling on the westbound failed to stop. It first hit a Hyundai vehicle and then collided directly into a Ford truck. The Ford truck in turn hit a number of other vehicles so that six vehicles were involved in the crash.
The greatest damage was sustained by the Ford pickup truck which was directly hit by the overspeeding GMC truck. Both the driver and the passenger in the truck died of their injuries. The driver has been identified as Vernon Morris, 40 and the passenger as Alvin Beck, 45. A number of other drivers in the vehicles involved in the crash sustained minor injuries and were taken to the local hospitals. However, no other individual sustained serious injuries.
The authorities suspected the GMC truck driver, Jesse Griffin, 29, of driving under the influence. Upon an investigation, it was found that Griffin was intoxicated. He has since been charged with a double count of intoxication manslaughter.
Intoxication manslaughter is a second-degree felony in Texas. The punishment for the charge is a jail time of 2 to 20 years along with a fine of up to $10,000. For two counts, the punishment often adds up so that the guilty party may receive up to 40 years in prison.
The investigations of the crash are still ongoing and it is possible that the troopers may level further charges against the driver who caused the crash.
