In February of 2009, the FDA issued a Black Box Warning (the strongest warning the FDA can issue) on the drug Reglan. The drug is used to treat acid reflux and gastroesophagel reflux disease by increasing contractionsin in the digestive system, causing food to pass through the system faster. The FDA has warned that patients who take Reglan are at severe risk of developing tardive dyskinesia, a central nervous system disease that can cause involuntary movements of the face, mouth, jaw, neck and even the torso. At this time a treatment for the disorder is not known. Side effects can include:
- Involuntary movements of the tongue
- Lip smacking
- Chewing or sucking movements
- Involuntary facial movements
- Pursing of the lips
- Tongue protrusion
- Muscle spasms
- Rapid eye blinking
- Drowsiness
- Nausea
- Restless Leg Syndrome
Reglan has also been connected with Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome. Symptoms of NMS can include:
- Fever
- Kidney Damage
- Muscle rigidity
- Delirium
- Unstable blood pressure
- Coma
