Madrid Barajas International Airport, Spain. Spanair Air Disaster. Wednesday, August 20, 2008 - 154 people were tragically killed when an airliner taking off en route to a Canary Islands resort swerved off the end of a runway at Madrid's airport, crashed and burst into flames. The plane, a McDonnell Douglas 82 (MD-82), carried 172 passengers and crew members. Only 19 survived. The flight, Spanair JK5022, was cross-listed as Lufthansa LH 2554. The plane had been headed to Gran Canaria, in Spain's Canary Islands, a popular vacation destination off the West African coast. The Madrid airport is the fourth busiest in Europe.
